Sweden is famous for its breathtaking nature, innovative design, and high quality of life but there’s so much more to discover! If you dream about studying in Sweden, don’t forget about Gothenburg, the country’s charming second-largest city. Known for its small-city vibe, picturesque canals, and sustainability, Gothenburg is a city that has something for everyone. Here are five fun and fascinating facts about Gothenburg that will make you even more excited to come here.
1. Volvo was born in Gothenburg
Volvo isn’t just a car brand in Gothenburg – it’s part of the city’s identity. Founded here in 1927, Volvo is now the largest employer in the region. It’s so integral to Gothenburg’s life that you’ll quickly notice that nearly everyone you meet works at Volvo – or knows someone who does! (my boyfriend does too 😄)
And if you’re a Volvo enthusiast (or just curious), the new World of Volvo experience center is a must-visit. This place presents Volvo’s history, culture, and future in one stunning architectural space.
2. Sweden’s largest amusement park is in Gothenburg
Liseberg, Sweden’s largest and most popular amusement park, is right here in Gothenburg. I’ve been there already 3 times since I moved to Gothenburg almost two years ago. In the summer, you can enjoy the roller coasters and concerts. But it isn’t just a summer thing. It’s a fun place to visit any time of the year. During Halloween, it’s decorated with spooky decorations, haunted houses, and themed rides, making it a fun way to enjoy the season. In winter, it turns into a cosy Christmas market, with an ice skating rink, holiday lights, and plenty of Swedish treats like glögg (mulled wine) and gingerbread.
Plus, if you’re a student, you’re in luck – discounted tickets are often available through Mecenat, so it’s possible on the budget too. Read more about Liseberg in winter.
3. Gothenburg is a multicultural city
Gothenburg’s cultural heritage is one of its most fascinating features. The city was originally built by the Dutch in the 1600s, chosen for its strategic location near the Göta River and its access to the North Sea. The Dutch influence is still visible in Gothenburg’s canal system, which was inspired by Amsterdam. This spot was particularly important because it provided a strong defensive position against Norway, which bordered the area at the time. Before Gothenburg was established, the nearby town of Lödöse had been Sweden’s primary trade hub, but Gothenburg was developed by Gustaf II Adolf as a more modern and strategic replacement, and people were asked to move from Lödöse to populate the new city.
The city has also welcomed other nationalities throughout history like Germans, Poles, and English, who contributed to its growth as a thriving port and trading center. Today, it’s home to a diverse population that includes communities from all around the world, including the US, the Middle East, and Africa, among others (also Slovakia 😊). It’s a city that wears its multicultural identity as a badge of pride, and it’s one of the things that makes it truly special.
4. Home to two world’s renowned universities
Gothenburg is home to not one, but two prestigious universities, each with a different focus. The University of Gothenburg, where I am studying for a Master’s in Communication, is known for its focus on social sciences, arts, humanities, and education. It’s a great university, where you feel encouraged to think creatively but also critically and it is consistently ranked among the top universities globally for its academic reputation and research output.
Chalmers University of Technology is a powerhouse for engineering, technology, and innovation. It’s renowned for cutting-edge research in areas like renewable energy, sustainable development, and AI, and regularly ranked high in global rankings for technical universities. If you’re passionate about creativity, technology, or making a positive impact, this city will inspire you as it’s a wonderful place to connect with ambitious, like-minded individuals from around the world.
5. The world’s most sustainable destination
Gothenburg’s commitment to sustainability is evident everywhere. No wonder, it has been named the world’s most sustainable destination seven times. The city has an extensive tram network that makes it easy to explore. You basically never need a car. Just a short ride away, you’ll find the Gothenburg Archipelago, beautiful islands perfect for kayaking, exploring, or swimming (if you’re brave 🧊🥶).
Gothenburg is also surrounded by green spaces, lakes, and forests. You can enjoy birdwatching, fishing, or just taking a nice walk anytime after school. It’s an environment that is very inspiring but also calming at the same time.
Disclaimer: To be honest, it rains a lot on the West Coast throughout the year (especially during winter) compared to other parts of Sweden. So if you hate rain, it might not be the right place for you. It’s basically a ‘little London’.
Why you should come to Gothenburg?
Gothenburg is a city that truly has it all. I moved here from a smaller city, Skövde, looking for more opportunities, and I’ve found that this city offers the perfect balance. It has all the energy and excitement of a larger city, with its international atmosphere and endless things to explore, but it still maintains that small-town feel where you can easily find your way.
Oh and it’s also home to Scandinavian’s largest building called Karlatornet!!!
I love living here, and I believe you will too. Let me know in the comments if you have any more questions about the city.
