Smögen, I investigated why it’s known as the ‘Summer town’ of Sweden.
moreAccomodation
Smögens Hafvsbad is a beautiful hotel, spa and conference facility that has been around for almost a century. It’s a beautiful old hotel with new furnishings on the inside. The pool and spa are a must do! The hotel is super popular and a famous landmark amongst the locals and tourists.
Views
Smögen has some of the best views on the West coast of Sweden! The coast feels like it goes on for a thousand miles. There is something about the blend of the hard rock, the sky and the sea which makes it almost magical!
Although it was a little cloudy, the views of the boat houses were still amazing. Smögen being a fishing-village turned summer tourist destination popular with Swedes as well as foreign visitors the boat houses serve as a beautiful reminder of its fishing heritage.
Smögen Pier
As we took a tour of the town, our guide was sure to mention how crowded Smögen gets during the summer ‘peak’ season. The populuation of the town booms from about 2,000 to 30,000 people. The Smögen Pier and the Smögen Brrygan (bridge) are a popular tourist destination.
Food
Smögen is well known for its fish, prawns and other seafood through its long history as a major fishing town. It also houses a local fish market. Our guide informed us that some of the locals still make a living from fishing and one of the biggest Norwegian fishing companies has a factory located in the town.
Nightlife
Smögen is also famous for it’s nightlife, bars and concerts that are held in Summer. A quick google search of coolest summer seaside town in Sweden will definitely bring up Smögen. This makes it a great destination for the young and old alike!
Takeaway
Although I visited Smögen during spring when it was rather cloudy and cold. I can’t wait to go back and visit during the summer and see all the town has to offer. I definitely suggest you check it out too. There are affordable hostel options for the student friendly budget.
Be sure to check out this post I wrote about another amazing town Hamburgsund also on the South Coast of Sweden!
