NFGL

In this post I will tackle questions like:

  1. What exactly is NFGL?
  2. How do you qualify to be part of NFGL?
  3. What does the NFGL do?
  4. Does membership last forever?

What exactly is NFGL?

The Network for Future Global Leaders (NFGL), is a network seeks to create a lifelong relationship with scholarship holders to Sweden and acts as a strong link between Sweden and their home countries. This allows for continued information and knowledge sharing even after graduation. Currently, the alumni network boasts 10,800 Alumni from over 140 countries representing over 500 degree programs.

How do you qualify to be part of NFGL?

All recipients of the SI Scholarships and SI Digital Ambassadors qualify. The scholarship programs range from the Visby, Swedish Institute Scholarships , Swedish Turkey scholarship and Western Balkans Scholarship.

Each years batch of scholarship holders come from across the world and represent diverse cultures, backgrounds and circumstances.

These scholarship holders make up the NFGL network.

What does the NFGL do?

NFGL arranges events, seminars and conferences across Sweden to which current and alumni students are welcome. Local chapters of NFGL networks are formed across Sweden to organize local events. At events we network, build relationships and learn how to become future leaders for our countries.

In the spring term of 2017, the NFGL network is present in:

NFGL

The organized events range from study visits, talks and workshops. They act as an avenue for members to network as well as experience first hand the Swedish Institute NFGL values. This year they are Leadership, management & networking, Human Rights, Employment and career development, Sustainability and Creativity and innovation.

As a current Swedish Institute Scholarship holder, I have been lucky to attend three NFGL events. One trip to UN City in Copenhagen, AB Volvo and Kalmar Energi. Through these study visits I have been able to see the innovative and sustainable aspects of Swedish and Scandinavian organizations.

The visit to UN City was insightful in that we got to delve into the sustainable development goals in depth with Ms. Stine Junge the Private Sector and Secretariat UNDP Denmark. At AB Volvo headquarters we visited the factory and got to experience innovation and sustainability first hand by following the production of a Volvo car from start to finish. At Kalmar Energi who produce 90% of the energy in Kalmar city, we got to learn about a project they are running by building of solar farms using a sort of crowdfunding model.

Through these three events I have gotten to bond with members of my local network as well as get to meet students from various cities in Sweden including Stockholm, Kalmar and Växjö.

Does membership last forever?

Yes! You are a lifelong member and become part of the alumni upon graduation. If you are the lucky recipient of a Swedish Institute scholarship for 2017/2018 make sure to look out for the NFGL events and attend and join on to as many activities as you can or even plan a few of your own.

You are also welcome to apply for next years round of scholarships here.

NB: See if you can spot me on the cover picture 🙂
