Anxiety and Loneliness: How to Cope When Moving Abroad

Moving to a new country is an exciting adventure, but it’s not always a walk in the park. Adjusting to a completely new environment often comes with anxiety-inducing procedures and moments of solitude that can make you miss the comfort and familiarity of home.

Back in my home country, I had a predictable routine—working 9 to 5 and navigating life with ease. Everything felt straightforward and familiar. But when I moved abroad, that sense of ease disappeared, and I found myself facing new challenges, often feeling overwhelmed and lonely.

If you’re feeling lost or struggling with these emotions, know that you’re not alone. I’ve been there too, and I’d love to share some practical tips that help me navigate these tough moments. Let’s get through this together!

1) Surround Yourself with Friends

Friends are like a second family, especially when you’re living abroad. They’re the people you’ll share unforgettable moments with, and their support can make a world of difference when loneliness creeps in. If you’re feeling down, don’t isolate yourself in your room—reach out to them.

Plan a fika together and chat about anything on your mind, have a cozy movie marathon with long films, or prepare a meal together—breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Even something as simple as grocery shopping can turn into quality time when shared with friends.

I’m incredibly grateful for my friends here in Sweden, who are always there when I feel anxious or overwhelmed. I know it’s tough to take that first step and leave your room when you’re feeling low, but having friends by your side makes all the difference. Remember, everything feels more manageable when you’re surrounded by people who care.

2) Stay Connected with Your Loved Ones

Sometimes, your friends abroad might not be available—whether they’re busy with classes or it’s late at night when loneliness strikes. That’s when reaching out to your loved ones back home can be a lifeline.

For me, the time difference with Peru works in my favor. Late at night, I can call my family or my best friend, and it makes a huge difference. A simple conversation with someone who knows you deeply can bring so much comfort.

Whenever I feel anxious, whether it’s while writing an essay or just having a rough day, a long call with my best friend can brighten my mood. Her familiarity and support instantly make things feel less heavy. The same goes for my family—calling my mom for advice or simply hearing her voice has a way of calming me down.

Even with the distance, your loved ones are always there for you. A quick call can remind you that you’re never truly alone.

3) Start a Hobby

Picking up a new hobby can be a great way to relieve stress, ease anxiety, and combat loneliness. Engaging in an activity you enjoy not only boosts your mood but also helps you connect with others who share the same interests.

Some of my friends have taken up running every morning, joined dance clubs, painted in groups, or hit the gym regularly. These activities not only help them stay active but have also introduced them to new friends.

I’m still planning to join dance classes myself as a way to manage daily stress and feel more balanced. It can be hard to start something new and make it a part of your routine, but I believe in you—and I hope you root for me too! A hobby can make a huge difference in how you feel. Give it a try—you might surprise yourself.

We all go through moments when we feel down, and that’s completely normal. During those times, it’s important to remember that there are people who care about us and are willing to support us. However, if these feelings become too overwhelming, don’t hesitate to seek help. It’s okay to reach out.

Many universities offer counseling services, so you can ask for advice on finding the best options for you. Visiting a psychologist can be a valuable step in taking care of your mental health. You’re never alone in this journey—help is always available.
