Reflections on my First Birthday in Sweden

Today is my birthday, and it’s a special one—it’s the first time I’m celebrating far away from my family and home. It feels a little strange, but also exciting, as I think about everything that has happened over these last four months in Sweden.

Since deciding to apply for my master’s degree here, life has been a constant learning experience. It’s not just about what I’ve studied in class but also the lessons I’ve learned from living in a new country, meeting people from all over the world, and adapting to a completely different culture.

On this special day, I want to take a moment to reflect and share these thoughts with you. Each step of this journey has taught me something new about myself, and I’m grateful for all the experiences—both the good and the challenging ones.

It’s Never Too Late

As I celebrate my 29th birthday, I can’t help but reflect on how much we worry about age. So many of us in our 20s believe that by the time we hit our 30s, we’re supposed to have everything figured out—our careers, relationships, and even our lives. I used to think like that too.

For a long time, I felt like I had missed my chance. After turning 25, I thought it was too late to go back to school or leave my home country. I convinced myself that the doors to new opportunities were closing fast.

But this year has taught me something important: age is just a number. It doesn’t matter if you’re 18, 29, or 50—you can start fresh whenever you choose. Life doesn’t follow a fixed timeline, and it’s never too late to chase your dreams, learn something new, or make a big change.

So, if you’re reading this and doubting yourself because of your age, don’t. Don’t limit yourself or let the years hold you back. Every day is a new opportunity to begin again. 💪

Go and Take the Leap!

Leaving your comfort zone is never easy—I know this from experience. It took me years to finally decide and say, “Yes, I’m going to do a master’s abroad, and I’ll do it in Sweden.” It’s a big, brave decision, and it’s not something that happens overnight.

Most of us get caught up in routines that feel safe and comfortable. We settle into patterns that make us forget about the big dreams we once had. That was me too. But this year, I learned that taking a leap of faith can completely change your life.

It’s scary, yes. But stepping out of your comfort zone opens the door to incredible experiences, helps you grow in ways you never imagined, and even allows you to understand yourself better.
So, if you’re thinking about studying abroad—or taking any big step in your life—remember that you can do it. You just need to believe in yourself, trust the process, and take that leap of faith. Who knows where it might lead? 🌍

Don’t Be Too Hard on Yourself

Perfectionism can be so harmful, and trust me, I know this all too well. I’m my own toughest critic, and it’s something I’m working on every day.

I’ll share a quick story: during my first course here in Sweden, I was incredibly stressed about writing my first essay. I had no idea how to approach it and spent two full weeks overwhelmed with anxiety, trying to make it perfect. Spoiler alert: I ended up getting a good score! But those two weeks? I can never get them back, and looking back, I realize I could’ve treated myself with so much more kindness.

Now, I’ve made a promise to myself: to be more patient, to give myself space to grow, and to not let perfectionism steal my joy.

And to every international student out there, this is your reminder:

  • We come from different education systems.
  • We’re learning in a language that isn’t our first.
  • We’re managing life far from home while navigating cultural differences.

These are huge accomplishments! So, if you’re feeling overwhelmed, take a deep breath, step outside for a walk, and remember this: You’re intelligent, you’re capable, and you’re doing amazing.

Don’t underestimate yourself. Celebrate your progress, give yourself time to rest, and don’t forget to have fun along the way. You’ve got this! 💪

Always remember this: you are good, you are enough. Take a moment to thank yourself for all you’ve accomplished this year and for everything you will achieve in the year to come.
As for me, I like to think that I’m not just a year older but also a year wiser. This year has been filled with mistakes, lessons, and a few proud achievements. Each experience, whether good or bad, has shaped me and helped me grow.

To all the international students out there, I hope you’re learning something valuable during your time abroad. It’s not always easy, but it’s a journey worth taking.

I also want to express my gratitude to everyone who has been part of this chapter of my life:

  • To the wonderful friends I’ve made in Sweden, who feel like family to me.
  • To my family back in Peru, who have supported me from afar.
  • To my best friends, who I talk to every day and who always remind me I’m not alone.
  • And to Sweden, for being so welcoming and giving me a space to grow.
