It’s Christmas time in Sweden! 🎄 And one of the most characteristic things here, apart from the Christmas markets, is the ice skating rinks they put everywhere, even in the main city squares. Last year I really wanted to try them, but I didn’t have the time. This year… I finally did it! ✨
❄️ Not my natural element
Last year I didn’t have time, but honestly, I was also too scared to try! I’m Peruvian, so my natural element is definitely not ice. There are very few places with ice in my country, and even in those places there are no ice rinks. So of course, the idea of falling and hurting my knees (or worse) panicked me.
And! I was also very embarrassed. I’ve seen kids here skating perfectly and teenagers who even look professional. But this time I went with a Nordic friend, so I felt a bit more confident (even though he said he didn’t know how to skate either… still, his natural element! 😆).
⛸️ Difficult but fun
As soon as I put the skates on, I felt like I was walking in heels, and I was still on the ground. Those shoes are also very heavy, so just walking was already difficult. And the moment I stepped onto the ice… I completely lost control of my legs. My legs were moving by themselves!!
My friend tried his best to teach me how to move my feet so I could at least advance a little, but I couldn’t, so I just moved while holding onto the corners. Luckily, I didn’t fall! 🙏 And it actually became enjoyable because it was so funny how we moved, sometimes like penguins 🐧, sometimes like robots 🤖.
Later, I was saved by some seals! 🦭 I don’t know the exact name of them, but they’re used as support (especially for kids). I sat on one, and my friend pushed me around so I could see the whole rink. I loved it!
🎤 Karaoke and skating
After a long time fighting with the ice, we realized that day was karaoke night at the skating rink!! 🎶⛸️ So while resting, we enjoyed the songs, and of course, the funny karaoke participants.
Special thanks to a group of male friends who sang Mr. Brightside with a lot of passion hahaha 🤣 Maybe they were drunk, but they definitely won the night as the most charismatic team. Maybe next time I’ll join the karaoke too… 👀🎤
In general, I’d say this was a very nice new experience, and I’m really grateful I could live it here 🤍 I will definitely try it again. And you? Would you like to try this experience? ❄️⛸️✨
