Guide to Housing in Lund!

Have you been accepted into a programme in Lund? First of all, congratulations! I’m sure you’re feeling excited — and maybe a little overwhelmed too. Among all the things you need to sort out, finding a place to live is one of the most important (and sometimes one of the trickiest!). Housing in Lund can be competitive, and sometimes it even comes down to a bit of luck.

But don’t worry — I’m here to walk you through the main housing providers and the key dates you should keep in mind!

LU Accommodation

If you’re a non-EU/EEA student already enrolled at Lund University, good news — this is your first (and best) housing option! As an international student paying tuition fees, you are guaranteed housing through LU Accommodation. To secure your spot, you need to join the housing queue on April 28.

Here’s how it works:

All students who apply during the 24 hours of April 28 (Swedish time, CEST) will be assigned a random queue time. To join, you’ll need the account information Lund University sends you — keep an eye on your university email for it!Once you have your account ready, you can access the portal here: LU Accommodation Portal.

On the portal, you’ll find a variety of room and accommodation options. You can explore all of them in detail here: LU Accommodation Options.

After checking out the available choices, make sure to rank your favorites. LU Accommodation will assign you a room based on your queue number and your listed preferences. You can learn more about the whole application process here: How to Apply, and if you need help navigating the portal, check out this handy tutorial: Application Portal Tutorial.

💡Personal Tip

From my experience, I strongly recommend accepting whatever accommodation you are assigned! It’s much better to arrive in Sweden with a guaranteed place to stay for at least a few months, rather than risking coming without any housing secured.

In my case, I managed to get one of my top choices and have been living there happily for around eight months. However, many students I know stayed in their LU Accommodation for just the first two months before finding a new place that suited them better, so you’ll always have the option to move later if you want!

AF Bostäder

AF Bostäder is the largest student housing provider in Lund — and if you’re a new student, you’re in luck! They reserve around 900 student housing spots specifically for newcomers through what’s called Novisch Priority.

📍How to Apply?

To qualify for Novisch Priority, you need to submit a housing application between July 10–12.
These dates are crucial, so make sure to mark them in your calendar! After you apply, AF Bostäder will check if you meet all the requirements for Novisch Priority — you can read about the eligibility criteria here.

Before applying, you also need to be a member of Studentlund. You can easily sign up here.
On July 13, you’ll find out your queue position and you’ll be able to start booking available housing through this page.

Need some help with the booking process? They also have a helpful tutorial to guide you step-by-step.

💡Personal Tip

From my experience, AF Bostäder is a fantastic backup option for international students.
It’s also ideal if you’re planning to come to Sweden with pets (which aren’t allowed in LU Accommodation) or if you’re moving with your partner or children.

One of my best friends came to Lund with her two cats and was able to find a perfect home for all three of them through AF Bostäder. Just a heads-up: accommodations here are unfurnished, so you’ll need to plan for buying or renting furniture once you arrive!

Facebook Groups

Another option you might come across is finding housing through Facebook groups.
Many private landlords post available rooms or apartments there, and some students already living in Sweden look for roommates through these groups as well.

However, I would recommend treating this option as a last resort. Unfortunately, scams are quite common in online housing groups.

If you do consider this route, always make sure to:

* Ask for a virtual or in-person tour of the place before paying anything.
* Ensure there is a formal rental contract signed before sending any money.

💡My Honest Advice

If you get an offer from LU Accommodation or AF Bostäder, accept it!

It’s much safer to come to Sweden with a secure place to stay, even if it’s just temporary.
Once you’re here, it will be much easier to search for new housing — you’ll be able to visit places in person and avoid potential scams.
